What is the meaning of Happu?
What throws us off balance and causes anxiety?
Happu, or "the eight winds" of
prosperity, decline, being disgraced by criticism spoken behind your back, honor, praise, being slandered by direct criticism, suffering, and pleasure.
The image captured by calligraphy above is one of me sitting in my practice, facing the eight winds.
My concept
I am Happuan Souen in Kyoto prefecture.
Happuan is the name of my tea room, the whole organization, and also one of my names.
The tea master, Sen no Rikyu, in response to the trend toward increasingly luxurious imported tea implements, said,
"There is no need for extravagance in chanoyu tea practice.
The utensils you have on hand are more than sufficient for
otemae tea-ceremony. In fact, they are of little concern.
Your focus should be on wholeheartedly attending to your guests."
I, too, think it is unfortunate chanoyu lessons are considered extravagant and that people hesitate to take up this practice.
Even in Japan, although we seldom wear kimono or boil with iron teakettle these days, the calm and care communicated through ceremonial tea are as valuable as ever.
I hope to provide experience of the essence of this practice to as many people as possible.

八風庵の由来
八風吹不動 （八風吹けども動ぜず「最上乗論」）から
頂戴いたしました。
八風とは、人の心を揺さぶる八つの事柄を表していて、
利益、名誉、称賛、快楽、 衰退、毀損、誹謗、苦痛
のことです。
タイトルの八風庵の墨書は、茶室に静かに坐る私のイメージです。
侘びの茶の湯は日常のもの
京都におります 八風庵宗圓 と申します。
八風庵は私の茶室の名前であり、私の活動の機構全体であり、
かつ私の号でもあります。
利休は
「茶の湯はぜいたくにならないよう
何がなくても客を心からもてなして
道具は常に有り合わせのものでよい」 としています。
それにもかかわらず、ハードルが高く、お金のかかる習い事に
なってしまったことを残念に思っています。
現在の普段の生活には、茶釜も着物も存在しませんが
一碗のお茶を介して心を通わす茶の湯の意義は変わりません。
多くの人に茶の湯の本当のおもしろさを感じていただき、
「私も美味しいお茶を点てて、お客様に差し上げたい」と
思っていただく機会を提供する必要性を強く感じています。
人と人が理解し合うために、
茶の湯にはできることがあるのです。
